Message from the 'President

T)ear Mumni andj^riends:

It is always a pleasure to welcome you back to the
Oakwood College campus. Now that we are on this side of
the new millennium, we are pleased that a vibrant student
body and encouraging progress wait to greet you.

How are things progressing at the Oaks? An inspiring
student week of prayer brought blessings to students and
members of the College family The academic program has
been greatly strengthened and encouraged by the ver\' posi-
tive evaluation ratings of three accrediting teams; Southern
.Association of Colleges and Schools, Adventist Accrediting
Association, and the General Conference. The landscape and
grounds have been greatly enhanced by the lighted sidewalks
leading to the recently dedicated Business and Technology
Complex, with a reflection pool and new frontage with the
Oakwood CoUege sign on the Adventist BoulevardTWynn Drive
intersection. In addition to a strong financial position and
a balanced budget, there has been extraordinary' success in
fund-raising which helped to fund the Business and Tech-
nology" Complex.

How can you help us to advance further? Surprise and
encourage us by offering a gift to assist with student scholar-

ships or one of our current projects. Further, we greatly need
your continued support in challenging other alumni and
friends to go the second mile in helping us make our expan-
sion dreams and our plans to achieve university status come
to fruition. Some of these dreams include: a new residence
hall, library expansion, Bradford-Cleveland Institute build-
ing, and completion of the lower level of the Business and
Technology Complex. These are just a few of the critical areas
we must address as we draw close to the end of this year, and
the beginning of the new 2002. Help us to help our young
men and women be all they can be for God and society.

Again, on behalf of the Oakwood CoOege family I say
welcome.

Sincerely

Delbert W. Baker, Ph.D.

The theme chosen for our OC Homecoming 2001
"Building Together" denotes a spirit which we hope will ignite
each of you on this special weekend.

We want you, our special alumni and friends, to enjoy
the breathtaking scenes of nature and the expansion of
our physical layout on the campus. Our alma mater is truly a
garden of beauty.

May your commitment this weekend as a result of seeing
so many of your classmates, friends, students, and campus

improvements be a pledge to financially make a sacrificial
gift for student scholarships and college development.

WELCOME HOME ALUMNI AND FRIENDS

There is a saying. "Ihe more things change the more
they stay the same. " Oakvvood College is proof of that. The
past five years have brought on many changes, in the world
as well as at Oakwood College. The world has seen changes
in leadership, Oakwood has seen changes in leadership. The
world has experienced an economic roller coaster, Oakwood
has experienced economic challenges and rewards. How-
ever, the world seems to still be the world. Constantly on the
brink of disaster and total destruction. Oakwood, praise the
Lord, is still Oakwood. Throughout the changes it still stands
as a shining beacon of truth, a safe haven for Christian Sev-
enth-day-.\dventist Education, and a place that has prepared
itself for the future changes that wiO inevitably come and
impact each of us. Oakwood is not headed for disaster or
destruction, instead, Oakwood is getting stronger every day

Oakwood's changes over the last year include: An aca-
demic evaluation from the Southern Association of Schools
and Colleges; Oakwood passed the accrediting with flying
colors and full acceleration for the next ten years; An
unprecedented face to face meeting of our President, Dr.
Delbert Baker, and the Governor of the State of Alabama;
The completion and opening of the new Business & Technol-
ogy Complex located on Adventist Boulevard.

These changes have helped put Oakwood in a position
to stay a solid institution that is a leader in Christian Educa-
tion. Highlights and changes that have strengthened the
Office for Development at Oakwood College include: Dr
Sherman Cox has added the responsibility for Alumni Rela-
tions to his task load of Annual Fund, Phon-a-thon, and
Associate Executive Director Jan Ross, our UNCF/Corporate
Director, has taken on the Pre-Alumni program for students
sponsored by the UNCF making our College Fund/UNCF pro-
gram more comprehensive. Alumni Giving for the past year
1999-2000 was in excess of $500,000. Go Alumni!!

As the College continues to grow and maintain the
standard that it has survived with, one challenge remains;
Support for the College. We would encourage each of you as
you make plans for the future to remember the students
at Oakwood College. If you would like information on
how to assist our students through the rigors of Christian
Seventh-day Adventist acadeniia, please contact us at the
Office of Development at (256) 726-7201 or c-niiiil us at
development@oakwood.edu.

Oakwood College is a non-profit charitable institution
for higher education. "We need you to ensure our future."

2001 Barents oftfie Jear
"Eddie and^Sy Hail, Sr.

Eddie James Hall Sr, was born in Covington, Georgia in
193-1- Ruby Beasley was bom in Atlanta, Georgia 1938. The
two were married in December of 1956. With neither of them
coming from an Adventist home, Eddie and Ruby received
the Lord in their hves in the late 50's. Ruby's life was touched
by Sister Addie Mercey and Eddie's life was touched by Brother
Theodore Thompson. Eddie was baptized in 1961 and Ruby
in 1962.

Life together for Ruby and Eddie began with his enhst-
ment in the United States .Army in 1955, where he served as
Private First Class until 1955. While Ruby enjoyed her life as
a mother and homemaker, Eddie (after leaving the army)
continued his profession at the Atlanta Board of Education
as a laborer Throughout his career he was promoted to a
plumber apprentice in 1966 and a licensed plumber in I969.
He was recently recognized as the first black plumber in the
Atlanta Public School System. Eddie received his Master
Plumbing hcense in 1979. Upon which, he started Hall and
Son's plumbing company in 1986.

Eddie and Ruby learned early in the Adventist religion
that a quality Christian education is a vital part of a child's
development. Eddie and Ruby liad eight children born be-
tween 1957 and 1970, The first child entered private school
in 1964. Over the course of the next 36 years Eddie and Ruby
educated their eight children in the Seventh-Day Adventist
school system. The schools were Berean Jr Academy, Greater
Atlanta Adventist Academy, Georgia Cumberland Academy, and
Oakwood College. It was never a second thought that any of
the Hall children would attend any school outside of the
Seventh-Day Adventist religion. Ruby and Eddie broke the
old cycle of education in the public school system and began
a family tradition of education in the Seventh-Day Adventist
school system. Eddie and Ruby's motto in life has been: "Train
up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will
not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:16)

Estella Gully Greene, a dedicated soul winner and
excellent teacher, grew up in the wind\ cit\' of Chicago. After
joining the SDA church at age 12, she attended Shiloh
Elementarv School, Shiloh Academy and Oakwood Academy

From a child Estella has had a passion to help people
and to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, This passion along
with her natural salesmanship abihties enabled her to be a
highly effective Literature Evangehst. This skill enabled her
to be [\\.t first student to earn three scholarships in one
summer. She was also \hQ first and only student to sell over
500 magazines in one day thus gaining the reputation of
being one of the best colporteurs of all time. Estella was a
trailblazer, distinguishing herself again in the Rehgion and
Theology Department as ihe first female to graduate from
Oakwood with a degree in Religion.

.\fter graduating from Oakwood College in 1949, she
worked as a bible worker for Elder E.C. Ward's and later Elder
CD. Brook's evangelistic efforts. Bible work is something
she reaUy enjoys. Throughout her hfe she worked in numer-
ous evangelistic efforts. She especially enjoys working with
her son. Elder Alfonzo Green, Jr. in his evangeUstic crusades.

Estella also has a genuine love for children. Dissatisfied
with the number of students in the public school system
unable to read, she decided to complete a Masters Degree in
Reading and postgraduate work in Special Education. 'While
working as ihe first black reading Specialist and consultant
in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Estella gained the distinction of
never having a child in her class who, with the help of the
Lord, she could not teach to read. She taught in the public
school system in Michigan and Kentucky for 30 years before
retiring in 1989.

In 19'^4, Estella and her husband Alfonzo accepted a
call to teach at West Indies College in Mandeville, Jamaica.

She was able to break down many barriers there as the first
female professor of Rehgion. Estella continued her love for
religion by completing postgraduate work in Religion at
Andrews University.

For over 50 years, Estella has actively supported the
Oakwood College Alumni Association. For years she served
as the head of the fund-raising and scholarship committees
and she presently continues to raise funds for the J.L. Moran
Chapter of the Alumni Association. Through her leadership
and salesmanship talents she has raised thousands of dollars
to help needy students to attend Oakwood College.

In October of this year, Estella will celebrate 50 years
of marriage to her husband, Dr. Alfonzo Greene, retired
Oakwood College Professor of Business Administration.

Together, they have three sons and one adorable daugh-
ter. Her oldest son Alfonzo, Jr. is Pastor in the Lake Region
Conference; Anthony (wife, Yvonne Darby Greene) is an
Attorney and owner of Greene Law Firm in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. Crystal, (husband, Leon Thomas) is a Computer
and History Teacher at Oakwood Academy; and Frederick
(wife, Terri Mack Greene) is an Attorney and Law Professor
in Ohio. Nine grandchildren, three boys and six girls, add
much love and delight to her life.

All four of her children attended Oakwood College and
her two college-age grandchildren are presently enrolled;
Donna, a sophomore pre-med major, and Alfonzo III, a gradu-
ating senior in Theology.

Presently, Estella enjoys her retirement by visiting the
sick, giving bible studies, and raising funds for various orga-
nizations. She also is an active member and officer of the
Oakwood College Church.

What can you do
i^ith a simple recipe?

Make Lots of Money!

We don't want to overrate this "Guaranteed-for-Success" program of raising dollars for
your organization, but our sole purpose is to help you create an outstanding cookbook,
with delectable recipes, that you'll be extremely proud of ..one that will be a generous
source of revenue to fund the programs you have envisioned.

These books, personalized and detailed to your tastes, will be keepsakes for generations
to come and a source of pride to your organization.

Our program is one of the most unobtrusive fund-raising programs you've probably
undertaken. The secret is in the recipe contributors, the more you have, the more books
you will publish and profit. It's that simple. No door-to-door selling. Not telephone
banks. No expensive publicity.

We use the latest digital printing technology to create your keepsakes. This
state-of-the-art equipment prints 'on demand'. You'll never have cookbooks left over at
the end of the program to stuff in a closet somewhere. We print what you need, when
you need it. No more. And after the initial release, you can order as often as weekly if
you like. Plus, we walk you through the whole process and even supply you with the
forms and other marketing material you'll need. Remember, we are guaranteeing the
results, so we have to have our "ducks in a are row!"

Give us a call at 256-704-0000 in Huntsville, Alabama, to have A MULTIMEDIA KIT
(on CD-ROM) or a PRINT PACKAGE sent to you from one of our Charity Cookbook
Specialists. Thanks.

Oakwood College Alumna of the Year - 3001

Prayer is the answer to every problem in life.

It puts us in tune with divine wisdom which knows how to adjust
everything perfectly.

So often we do not pray in certain situations because from our
standpoint, the outlook is hoepless.

But nothing is impossible with God.

Nothing is so entangled that it cannot be remedied; no human
relationship is too strained for God to bring about reconciliation
and understanding; no habit is so deep-rooted that it cannot be
overcome, no one is so weak that he cannot be made strong.

No one is so ill that he cannot be healed; no mind is so dull that
it cannot be made brilliant.

Whatever we need, if we trust God, He will supply it. If anything
is causing worry or anxiety, let us stop rehearsing the difficulty
and trust God for healing, love and power.

Remember Always the Power of Prayer!!!

Pastor Clement A. Murray is a native of Buffalo, New
York and was educated in the public schools of that city be-
fore attending college on a basketball scholarship. At age ten
he was baptized into the Emmanuel Temple Seventh Day
Adventist Church and was the only Adventist in his family. In
the years following his entrance into ministry he led his sis-
ter, mother and father to Christ, personally baptizing his dad
one month before his death in 1979, the year of his ordina-
tion.

Pastor Murray is a 1974 graduate of Oakwood College
with degrees in Behavioral Science and Rehgion. He holds a
Master of Pastoral Ministry Degree from Andrews University,
a Doctor of Humane Letters, and a Doctor of Divinity, and is
working towards a PhD in Communications.

He has successfully pastored a number of churches in
the Northeastern Conference and in 1985 he became the
youngest senior pastor of the historic Ephesus church in
Manhattan with a membership of over 2100. He served there
with distinction for over seven years before assuming respon-
sibihties as Communication Director for the conference in
1992. His ministiy has been highlighted by the opportunity
to meet, preach to and ultimately baptize a number of promi-

Qwendowtxjn Winston poster, MPH

This vivacious, dedicated Christian woman is a fourth
generation Seventh-day Adventist. Her paternal grandfather,
Elder wniiam Henry Winston, and her maternal great-grand-
father. Elder Storey, were pioneer African-,\merican pastors
who were introduced to the denomination by Ellen G. ^Shite.

Gwen attended Oakwood CoOege. After receiving her
Bachelor of Arts degree in Education she matriculated at Loma
Linda University recei^g a Master of Science in Public Health.
She is a Health Education Speciahst, certified by the National
Commission for Health Education Credentiahng, Inc. she has
done post graduate studies in the Department of Public Health
at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.

While working as a Bible worker for Allegheny East
Conference, Gwen's concern went further than giving Bible
smdies. She tells the story of the lady with whom she was
studying became anxious when it was time for her children
to renjm home from school and she had no meal for them.
Gwen took the healthy items she found in the woman's kitchen
and made her a dehcious meal - oatmeal patties, bread and
salad. Thus, began her health ministry. She organized the
Fitness for Life Homestyle which provided health infor-
mation to neighborhood block to block.

Gwen served as Health Director of Allegheny East
Conference for 22 years. As health editor for Message
Magazine, she shared many dehcious healthy recipes. Her
development of the Fitness for Life Conditioning Camp
attracted people with chronic degenerative diseases to assist
them in changing destructive life-style patterns. Her Lifestyle
Counselor Certification Program provided skills to lay-
men and pastors, to enable them to become effective leaders
in helping people, one-on-one, to alter destructive Ufestyle
patterns.

A multi talented woman, music has an mtegral part of
Gwen's hfe. She began directing the Ebenezer SDA Church
choir when she was 1 3 years old. She is the music director
for the Allegheny East camp meetings. She directed the Pine
Forge Academy Choir for several years. The rendition of "Lift
Up die Trumpet" arranged by Reger Smith was first performed
by the choir under her direction. As director of the choir,
Gwen demanded perfection of her choir members as many
prepared to enter Oakwood College. Many of those under
her mtelage became star members of the Acolians.

She and her husband Allen W. Foster, are a musical team
second to none. As the director of social services for the
Head Start program in the Philadelphia school district, he is
also a minister of music for the Ebenezer Church. As a musi-
cal team, they attract audiences from cities on the east coast
when they present their annual performance of Handel's
Messiah. They have three adult children, Joya Follette (Lysle,
III), and Angela Griffen (Maurice). They have two grand-
children. Their son, Allen Jr. is deceased.

Most recently, Gwen was appointed Health and Fitness
Czar of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by another Oakwood
Alumni, Mayor John Street. Since the city has been labeled
the most unhealthy city in America, Gwen has a mission to
make Philadelphia the most health city.

Along with her recognitions as Alumna of the Year, Loma
Linda University School of Public Health, recipient of the
Campion Educator of the Year Award, Oakwood College,
Alumna of the Year, Loma Linda University and Black Alum
of the Year, Loma Linda University, we are proud to award
Gwendolyn Winston Foster Certificate of Merit, Allegheny East
Conference.

QwencCoCyn ly, foster

We have watched Gwen serve this entire conference for

many decades. She has shown stalwartness for youth and

served as a Christian role model. Gwen worked long and

hard for many years to train the youth for service. She

asked for very little in return. Gwen led out in keeping the

mind and body fit for service and God's blessings. We are so

proud of how she has used her many God given talents for

His people and His causes. She loves the Lord and awaits

His second coming. She exemplifies conference leadership.

We are extremely proud that she is representing our

conference for the Oakwood College Alumni Award.

JacclueCine T^iizabetk 'S arris

Jackie (as she prefers to be called) was born Jacqueline
Elizabeth Henry to Morris and Maxine Henry in Springfield,
Ohio. She considers herself blessed to be born into a Chris-
tian Seventh-day Adventist family, whose patriarch, Guy Henry
(her grandfather) , was a charter member of the South Foun-
tain Seventh-day Adventist Church in Springfield. At an early
age, until she left for college, Jackie manifested her love for
Christ and his church by serving in various capacities, because
she wanted to see the programs of the Lord continue. If a
position needed to be filled, she was a ready volunteer. As a
result, she has been church pianist, AYS leader, minister of
music, assistant treasurer, and choir director of a youth group.

One of Jackie's desires was fulfilled when she became a
student at Oakwood in 1968. Although she had never visited
the campus before her matriculation, she had heard and met
graduates of Oakwood, and were impressed with their
demeanor and devotion to Christ. She attended one year as a
student in Enghsh and journalism. Following her tenture at
Oakwood, she transferred to Wright State University in Dayton,
Ohio where she continued her studies in the aforementioned
fields. During her matriculation at Wright State University,
she met and married Chfford Parris with whom she had two
wonderful children, Kiisha (daughter) and Khahd (son).

When Chfford accepted a graduate fellowship to attend
The Ohio State University (OSU), Jackie decided to accom-
pany him and work at the university. She continues to work
there as an office coordinator for the director of Student
Judicial Affairs where she coordinates the office activities;
assists in managing the judicial process for a student popu-
lation of 48,000 by organizing and preparing cases for adju-
dication and implementing systems and policies; maintains
judicial records, conducts background checks for bar
examining boards, FBI and other government agencies. Jackie
remains active at the university. She has served as office

coordinator for the OSU Campus/United Way Campaign and
Operation Feed Campaign; member of the Critical Difference
for Women Re-Entry Scholarship Committee; member of the
Administrative Professional Development Program (advisory
committee to develop curriculum for office stafO ; and chair-
person for the Brown Bag Luncheon/Music Series to promote
diversity within the Department of Student Services.

Jackie has been an active member of the Columbus
Chapter of the Oakwood College Alumni, since 1986. She has
participated in various activities with the Columbus Chapter.

To promote the matriculation and graduation of students
from historically black colleges, Jackie became a member of
the Columbus branch of the Inter- Alumni Council (an affih-
ate of the United Negro College Fund), where she served as
program chairperson for the James E. Stamp Alumni Recog-
nition Dinner in September 2000.

Jackie considers her greatest achievement to be the
graduation of her two children from Oakwood College in 1997
and 1998 respectively. She accredits that achievement to the
Lord. She recognizes that without Him, the goal could not
have been reached, especially since she was a single parent
by the time the children arrived at Oakwood.

Jackie remains active in the church - Ephesus Seventh-
day Adventist Church in Columbus, Ohio. Throughout the
years, she has served as church pianist. Sabbath School
teacher for the primary class. Sabbath School Superinten-
dent for the Children's Division, choir member of Oasis, choir
director for two children's choirs, choir pianist for another
children's choir; head clerk, and member of the Singles
Ministries Committee.

Jackie has one more desire and that is to see Jesus. He
is her Comforter, Friend, and Provider. "For I was young and
now I am old, but I have never seen the righteous forsaken,
nor His seed begging bread." Psalms 37:25.

Joseph ^eete, Sr.

Joseph Peele was born in Suffolk, Virginia. He lived with
his Grandmother and she reahzed at an early age that he
enjoyed greeting people. As a result of his outgoing person-
ahty she encouraged him to join the Lsher Board at her
Church. At the age of nine, Joseph moved to New York City
where he attended the pubhc schools and continued to serve
on the Usher Board in his Mother's Church.

In the mid 50 s, his neighbor and friend. Elder John
Champion, extended an invitation to the Peele family to take
bible studies and attend the Mt. Vernon S.D.A. Church, in Mt.
Vernon, New York: they accepted. ,\fter visiting the Church
and receiving such a loving and friendly welcome from the
members, the Peele's decided to continue their bible studies
and later accepted the Third ,\ngels Message.

Brother Peele has always enjoyed ushering and has been
an avid supporter of Youth and Christian Education. Joseph
Peele. Otis Butler and several other church members formed
the Northeastern Usher Federation. The primary purpose of
the Federation was to serve at large gatherings in the North-
eastern Conference (Campmeetings. Youth Federations, Evan-
gelistic Campaigns, etc.) in effort to raise funds for financial
assistance to students pursuing education.

One of the greatest enjoyments of Bro. Peele's life is
serving God with his gift of ushering. He has had the oppor-
tunity over the past forty years to usher and assist most of the
Great Regional Evangelist of the Seventh Day Adventist Church,
and has served at many Regional Conference and General
Conference meetings.

Joseph Peele is currently serving in the Lake Region
Conference. He and his wife, Vera are members of the Bethany
Chapel S.D.A, Church in Elkhart, IN, where he sei^ves as Elder,
Personal Ministries Leader and Head Usher. He also seizes
as Chaplain of the Charles E. Dudley Chapter of Oakwood
Alumni.

Brother Peele is proud of his three children who are all
products of Christian education. Joseph Peele, Jr is a retired
Correctional Officer of the New York Police Department,
Captain Irving Peele, of Laguna, California is a Pilot with
American Airhnes and Angela Blake of Bronx, New York is a
Teacher and Singer

Oakvvoodite during the 1930's. Presently a resident of Bronx,
New York. Carroll was born in Jackson, Mississippi an hour
after the birth of his twin sister, Carolyn.

Carroll received his elementary education at Berea Sev-
enth-Day Adventist School in Jackson and Manhattan Elemen-
tar/ School, now renamed R.T Hudson School, in the Bronx.

He later attended Northeastern Academy, Oakwood Col-
lege, and completed his education at New York City Police
Academy

From 1962 to 1966, he was a United States Marine at-
taining the rank of E-5 Sergeant. Carroll was a member of
the New York City Pohce Force 25 years and received several
merit awards. He retired in 1992. A friend and mentor who
had a profound impact on his life was a fellow police officer,
Justus Lester.

Our honoree loves people and engages in many com-
munity^ activities. He conducted a successful "After School"
Project benefitting 450 young people. He served as a youth
counselor at Victory Lake Camp in Hyde Park, New York.

Carroll is a member of Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist
Church where he and his wife Donetta attend Sabbath School
and church regularly

The Tyler's are parents of 4 children: Michael, Darius,
Angela, and Marci and grandparents of 4 grandchildren.

Carroll serves faithftjlly in the A. Samuel Rashford Chap-
ter of the Oakwood College Alumni Association. Recently he
was coordinator of the Annual End-of-Summer Picnic and a

His mother, Mattie Tyler, was a "problem solver" al-
ways assuring CarroU she "was praying for him and every-
thing will be all right." She loved the Lord and served Him
faithftilly!

Carroll's favorite pursuit is helping people!!!

The A. Samuel Rashford Chapter of the Oakwood Alumni

Mean W. OvCiddCeton

Mean W. Middleton was born in New Madrid, Missouri,
the eldest child of the late Ernest and Bertha Mitchell. She
was reared in a Christian home even though her parents were
not acquainted with the Three Aiigels' Messages. Her pater-
nal grandfather was a Baptist minister and she grew up in
church. Even as a child, she always had an active part in the
church.

At the age of seven her family moved to Toledo, Ohio
where she received her elementaiy and secondary educa-
tion. She always had an interest in business so she pursued
advanced studies in Business Administration with a major in
Accounting.

Alean's first employment was with the Federal Govern-
ment, in Rossford, Ohio. During this time she met Alyce Tho-
mas, wife of the local church pastor, who invited her to take
Bible lessons. After successfully completing the course she
was baptized. She was the first member of her immediate
family to embrace these Bible truths.

A few years later she transferred to a civil seiTice posi-
tion in Harrisburg, PA where she stayed until 1964. She then
accepted another transfer with the Government to Pasadena,
CA. Her first interest was to find a church home. She united
with The Berean Church, in Los Angeles, where her two
daughters, Paula and Carmell, were baptized.

In 1967 she left Federal employment and accepted a
position as SecretaiT/Administrative Assistant in the Office of
Regional i\ffairs of the Pacific Union Conference. It was there
that she met James P Middleton and they were married in
1968. She continued employment with the Pacific Union
Conference, Black Ministries Department, for nearly 20 years.

Alean did not have the ojijiortunity to attend Oakwood
College, but after mariying an Oakwoodite, she gained love
for the College and in 1971 started supporting it through the
,\lumni Association in the Los Angeles area.

In 1976, at a meeting with Oakwood College represen-
tatives, who came to Los Angeles to reorganize the Alumni
Chapter, she was elected President of Californians for
Oakwood College Alumni Association. In 198.% she

was elected Regional Vice President for the National
Oakwood College Alumni Association. She then orga-
nized chapters in the Bay Ai'ea, Inland Empire (Riverside/San
Bernardino), San Diego and Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson).
Year after year thousands of dollars were sent from the West
Coast to Oakwood College to support students from their re-
spective areas. She continually served in both capacities un-
til she left California in 1991, and still holds a Lifetime
Membership in Californians for Oakwood College
Alumni Association.

Because of Alean's "Faithful and Dedicated Service" she
was presented the Distinguished Service Award by Of-
ficers and Board of Trustee members at Oakwood College
Commencement on June 3, 1984. She continued her enthu-
siasm and in 1986 she was elected to the Oakwood College
Board of Trustees. She served two five-year terms and on
June 6, 1996 she received a Resolution of Appreciation
for her faithful service on several committees.

,\fter the untimely death of her husband, in 1988, Alean
was left alone to make decisions for her future. As she had
launched a new career in Real Estate in Los Angeles, she
moved to Huntsville in June, 1991 and secured her Realtor
& Broker License for the State of Alabama. In January, 1992
she opened a sole proprietorship, A. Middleton Real
Estate. Today it has become the largest African-American
owned and operated Real Estate business in Huntsville, with
10 Realtors and one Associate Broker

Alean is a member of the Oakwood College Church. She
has served as Assistant Treasurer, Assistant Church Clerk,
Receptionist, and has held membership on the following
committees: Finance, Church Renovation, Rehgious Liberty
and Disabilities Ministries. She is also a member of the J. L.
Moran Alumni Chapter. She has served as chairperson of the
following committees: Constitution and Bylaws, Membership,
and Social, also Assistant Treasurer.

Alean W. Middleton has received many other plaques
and awards for her outstanding service to the Church, her
family and her career To God Be The Glon!

Mozell Mills was bom on Februai7 15, 1915, the eldest
daughter of Shirley and Solomon Mills. In 1930 the Mills
Family attended an evangelistic crusade in Montclair, NJ,
conducted by Pastor J. M. Cambell. As a result, the entire
family of eight was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist
Church. In the fall of 1934, Mozell Mills traveled to Hunts-
ville, Alabama and enrolled at Oakwood Junior College on a
Message Magazine Scholarship.

During her first Christmas at Oakwood College, Mozell
met a young, handsome Theology student named Edgar A.
Lockett in the dining hall, and they soon became friends.
Friendship turned into romance and the following Christmas
they were engaged. And on Christmius Eve 1936, Edgar Lockett
and Mozell Mills were married. To this union was born one
son, Edgar A. Lockett, Jr, who is affectionately called Sonny"
Sonny and wife Charleen hve in Dallas, Texas where he is a
physician. They have four children: Charlene, Kimberlee, Kelli,
Brent and Rachel.

For 40 years Edgar and Mozell Lockett ministered in
the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They first served in the Texas
Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Followed by assign-

ments in the Oklahoma Conference, and the Southern New
England Conference: Connecticut District. The Lockett 's were
ministering in the New Haven/Bridgeport, Connecticut Dis-
trict in 1945, and were founding members of the "Great"
Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. In the
churches Edgar served as pastor, and Mozell found her
"niche" teaching children in the Youth Sabbath School,
assisting with special programs. In 1977, the Lockett 's retired
and relocated to central Florida. Upon arrival, they became
loyal and active supporters of the Greater Orlando Chapter
of the Oakwood College Alumni Association.

On Christmas Eve in 1998, Edgar and Mozell celebrated
their 62nd wedding anniversaiy Sadly only 7 days later on
New Years Eve, Elder Edgar Lockett Sr. passed away

We the members of your family also share in honoring you as
the Certificate of Merit Award for your life of service.

In recognition of your faithful dedication to God, your Alma
Mater (Oakwood College), your Family and for the
unconditional love that you have always shown to all, we
lovingly congratulate you.

Love is patient; love is kind and envies no one. Love
is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude; never selfish,
not quick to take offense. Love keeps no score of
wrongs; does not gloat over other men's sins, but
delights in the truth. There is nothing love cannot face;
there is no limit to its faith, its hope, and its endurance.

In Loving JVIemory or
David Emmanuel Jenkins

NovemW 16, 1941- November 17, 2000
Oakwood College Class oi 1973

The things that he accompUshed
Have never yet been told,
For David was a good man
Who had a heart of gold.

His hands were always working
To help someone in need.
His mind was always searching
To do a noble deed.

He loved the youth and labored
To teach unfailingly,
Right principles and valor
With truth and honesty.

He touched the lives of many
And formed a special bond.
He's gone but not forgotten,
His memory lingers on.

He loved the Advent message,
Was God's ambassador.
He lived to please the Master
And show His character.

When Jesus comes in glory.
This godly man will rise
To meet His loving Savior
And reign with Him on high.
